Caroline´s
World
Caroline’s world was broadcast on the 24 of december 2001 at
1.00 o’clock in the night, although the film was produced as
a prime time release. This was due to the radical change in the fiction
department of the broadcasting company RTL. The film was mentioned
in several tv-magazines as the „top of the week“ and it
was shown afterwards on several filmfestivals. The film was very well
received by younger audiences.
The Story:
13-year-old Caroline lives with her ex-punk parents Agathe and
Thore in their run-down little house, dreaming of a better life.
Her parents, former mohawked rebels, are continually aghast to find
they have become their own worst nightmare: Agathe is reduced to
being a housewife and mother, roles she fills as inadequately as
reluctantly. Thore is now an underpaid security guard at a local
bank. Although they both love their daughter more than anything,
they have little time for her. Agathe is preoccupied with her seemingly
lost days of youth, Thore is busy struggling to keep their little
family above water. Caroline increasingly loses herself in her favorite
TV show, The Horse Ranch, identifying completely with the lead character,
Angela, who is her age, buying only products associated with the
series and eating only what the characters eat.
One day, calamity strikes when Agathe is visiting Thore at the bank
and winds up in the middle of a robbery. Suddenly everything happens
very fast, and at the end Agathe lies dead on the floor. After this
disaster, Thore quits his job in despondence and flees into drink.
Caroline escapes into the world of her TV show, becoming almost completely
detached from reality. Her grades go down, she withdraws from her
friends at school. Only a deaf boy, Jon, still manages to keep contact
with her, helping her out against class bully Kicker. By the time
class teacher Mrs. Eiffel realizes what is going on with Caroline,
it is almost too late.
